Day hospices

The Wellcare program at Sunshine Hospital (of Western Health and Mercy Palliative Care)

Day hospices provide centre-based activities and support for people living with a life-limiting illness who are living in the community and are able to travel to the day hospice location. Day hospices aim to support people through their illness, managing symptoms and promoting wellbeing.

Activities may include cooking, gardening, craft, various therapies, conversation, companionship and other tailored one off support such as the Western Health/Mercy Palliative Care ‘Wellcare Wishes’, where a person expresses a wish and an experience is tailored to suit them and their family in order to create special memories. Staffing includes a mix of nurses, counsellors and volunteers. Medical support is also available. Benefits include time-out (respite) for carers.
